NCC Comes Up Short In Overtime Thriller

NCC Men's Basketball traveled to Sioux Center, Iowa to take on Dordt College on January 19.
 
Both teams started off strong. As the half was winding down, NCC had a 3-point lead however, Dordt managed a 15-0 run, handing the Sentinels their first double-digit deficit of the game (29-41). NCC worked to cut into the lead and managed to cut it to 2 in the closing minute of the half (47-49). A three pointer from Dordt to end the half put the Sentinels down by 5 going into halftime (47-52).
 
Dordt held onto their lead at the beginning of the second half, but NCC remained within striking distance. With just under 11 minutes remaining, the Sentinels tied it up at 72 a piece; however, NCC wasn't able to reclaim the lead. With just under 5 minutes remaining in regulation, DJ Hanes led the Sentinels on an 11-2 run giving NCC their first lead since 8:32 in the first half (93-90). With 17 seconds left in regulation, the Sentinels found themselves down by 3 with a chance to tie. DJ Hanes found the space and knocked down a last second shot sending NCC into overtime (103-103). Dordt started off strong in overtime, opening with a 7-0 run (103-110). The Sentinels tried to overcome the deficit, however despite their incredible performance on the evening, NCC came up just short of Dordt (116-118).
 
DJ Hanes had an outstanding performance setting a new career-high of 72 points. Hanes shot 66% from the field and 44% from beyond the arc. Off the bench, Drue Aguilera added 13 points followed by Jordan Makanjuola with 10 points.
 
For Dordt, Garrett Franken finished with 27 points.
 
Next, the Sentinels will travel to Lawrence, Kansas to take on Haskell Indians Nations University on Wednesday, January 23 at 7p.m.
