The NCC Sentinel Men's Soccer team opened the 2019 campaign at home against Calvary University on Tuesday, August 27, 2019. Each team hoped to start the season with a victory, but it was the Sentinels who struck early and often to take the 7-0 victory Tuesday evening.
Luis Lemus (Jr.) got the party started with the first goal just under 13 minutes into the contest. He followed it up 13 minutes later with another goal as a part of a 6-minute stretch that would see three different Sentinels score (RaShawn Jackson 22:27, Luis Lemus 25:36, Zach Gomez (So.) 27:57). RaShawn Jackson (Fr.) scored his second goal of the night at 39:57 to help the Sentinels take a 5-0 lead into half time.
Calvary came out strong in the second half and went on the attack several times. Despite the shift in momentum, the Sentinels remained resilient. All of Calvary's charges were denied by Goal-Keeper Dakota Fox (So.) and the Sentinel defense.
Jael Resendiz (Jr.) brought the home crowd back into the game with a goal at 72:50. His relentless effort to finish the goal despite a deflection seemed to embody the Sentinels' effort all match. In the 89th minute of the match, RaShawn Jackson capped the victory, and his freshmen debut, with a third goal and hat trick for the Sentinels.
After the game, Coach Jeremy Tosaya was very proud of his team stating, "We are very happy to begin the season with a win, but we are most excited by how we were able to do it. The guys played hard as a team." Coach Tosaya was also energized by the play from his freshmen forward RaShawn Jackson saying, "RaShawn played a great first game for us. It is always a big deal to score 3 goals in a game and doing it on opening night as a freshman is truly impressive."
NCC will look to keep the goals coming against Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN on Friday, August 30th. The Calvary Warriors' next match will be against Barclay College on Saturday, August 31st. Looking ahead, the Warriors will host the Sentinels for a rematch on September 13th in Kansas City, MO.
