On Friday, October 11
th, 2019 the Nebraska Christian College Sentinels played host to the Lincoln Christian University Red Lions for a double-header in Women's and Men's Soccer. The rivalry matchup was played at beautiful Morrison Stadium and did not disappoint the faithful fans that came out to support.
The Women's Game kicked-off first and was truly a back and forth battle the whole first half. The Sentinels and Red Lions traded opportunities, but it was Lincoln Christian who converted with a goal at the 31:46 mark to take a 1-0 lead to the half. Nebraska Christian responded in the second half by dominating possession and putting endless pressure on the Red Lion defense. While the defense and goal keeping were excellent,
Kelcie Ward was able to find
Madeline Aguilar in the 83
rd minute to even the score at 1-1. That goal extended Aguilar's streak of consecutive games with a point to 5 and forced overtime.
The Sentinels took their momentum and tremendous crowd support to overtime. The Sentinel attack continued to put pressure on the Red Lion defense, but they could not convert any of their runs to points. When the teams moved to the second and last 10-minute overtime, each became just a little more desperate. The Red Lions would bring out their goalie for free kicks and a numbers advantage on their attacks, but still no one could convert. However, with just 14 seconds left in the match, the Red Lions were able to find a corner of the net to earn the 2-1 victory.
Despite the tough loss, Coach Tosaya was encouraged by his team. "Our goal tonight was to create chances and we did that. We have to give credit to Lincoln Christian's team, and especially their goalie, for a great effort tonight. I'm very pleased with the opportunities we had and as we close out the season, I expect we will start to finish more of those chances off with goals."
The Red Lions and Sentinels will meet again on October 25
th in Illinois. Until then, Lincoln Christian moved to 1-10-0 on the season and will next play on October 19
th at Maranatha Baptist University. Nebraska Christian will look to improve upon their 1-7-0 record on October 17
th when they play at Manhattan Christian College.
