NCC Comes Up Short Against Waldorf
NCC Women's Basketball traveled to Forest City, Iowa to take on Waldorf University on November 20.
The Sentinels sought to avenge their previous loss to Waldorf in NCC's season opener. Waldorf hoped to snap their 5-game losing streak. Waldorf led for a majority of the game, but a final push from the Sentinels in the fourth quarter gave NCC the lead and brought hope back to NCC. A final shot to win the game fell short for the Sentinels and gave Waldorf the home win.
NCC took the early 4-2 lead in the opening minutes. Waldorf went on an 8-0 run during the first quarter, which gave them an 8-point lead. At the end of the quarter, NCC trailed Waldorf 18-11. Waldorf extended their lead to as many 12 during the second quarter. The Sentinels went on a 10-0 run, cutting the lead to 2 (24-22). Going into halftime, Waldorf led by 4 (30-26).
In the third quarter, Waldorf managed to bump their lead back up to 9. NCC brought the lead back down to 4, going into the fourth quarter (48-43). Back-to-back bucket from Waldorf extended their lead to 10. The Sentinels answered with a 13-0 run including a 3-pointer from Jessica Hinde that gave NCC their first lead since it was 2-4, giving the Sentinels a 1-point advantage with 3:20 remaining (54-53). Another bucket for NCC extended their lead to 3. Two key turnovers by NCC ended with Waldorf at the line on two consecutive possessions, which gave Waldorf a 2-point edge over the Sentinels with 29 seconds to go. A drive by Kayla Bloodworth tied the game 59-59 with 8 seconds left. Coming out of the timeout, Waldorf put up a jump shot that rattled in giving them the 2-point lead with 3 seconds left. Kayla Bloodworth got an open look for 3 to win the game at the buzzer but could not connect, sealing NCC's 61-59 defeat. The Sentinels dropped to 4-5 overall and Waldorf improved to 2-5.
Alexis Frondarina led the Sentinels in scoring with 22 points. Frondarina also had 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Kayla Bloodworth totaled 17 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Jessica Hinde had 10 points.
Waldorf was led by Taylor Fricke with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Next, the Sentinels will travel to Overland Park, KS to take on Kansas Christian College on Tuesday, November 28 at 5p.m.
