On Thursday, October 3
rd, the Nebraska Christian Women's and Men's Soccer Team traveled to Ankeny, IA for a double-header with Faith Baptist Bible College. The women's game was played first and won by Faith Baptist with a final count of 10-1. The men followed and the Sentinels prevailed 3-2 in a double overtime thriller.
The NCC Women were coming off their first win of the year, but Faith had a 2 game winning streak of their own. Faith struck early and often, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of play.
Madeline Aguilar continued her scoring streak by finding the back of the net in the 20
th minute. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to kick start the offense as the Sentinels trailed 7-1 at half. NCC tightened up defensively in the second but lost with a final score of 10-1.
After the game, Coach Tosaya felt that things could have gone better. "We didn't match their energy to start the game and dug ourselves into a hole early. It wasn't our day defensively. The good news is we get to brush this off and play again tomorrow at a great venue [Morrison Stadium]." As Coach Tosaya mentioned, the Sentinel Women (1-4-0) will host Ecclesia College (1-4-0) on Friday, October 4
th at Morrison Stadium (on the campus of Creighton University).
The NCC Men had a different experience in Ankeny, and one that could be season changer. The Sentinels entered the contest with a record of 2-5-0 on the season following a tough road loss to Nebraska Wesleyan. The Eagles were 5-4-0 on the year and winners of 3 out of their last 4. These two teams battled for 110 minutes of soccer before determining a winner.
The Sentinels flipped the script of the women's game by striking early with a goal of their own. Hezrom Onchomba was assisted by Zach Gomez in the 16
th minute. Then Jael Resendiz scored in the 37
th minute to give the Sentinels a 2-0 lead at half time. However, the game was far from over.
The Eagles came out and scored in the 58
th minute and 71
st minute to even the score at 2-2. Faith had suddenly regained the momentum at home and looked to secure another win on the season. Despite playing down due to injuries, the Sentinels responded and stopped the run to send the game to overtime. An extra 10 minutes was not enough to separate these teams, so a second overtime was played. It wasn't until the 106
th minute that the tie was finally broken. RaShawn Jackson assisted Hezrom Onchomba for the game winning goal. The Sentinels held on and escaped Ankeny with a precious victory.
Coach Tosaya was very impressed after the game. "I'm so proud of the mental toughness on this team. We could've easily folded in the second half but stayed resilient to force overtime. Even playing down and being exhausted the guys battled and were able to earn that win. That is a huge win for us over a quality opponent."
Faith Baptist moves to 5-5-0 on the season and will play William Penn on Tuesday, October 8
th. Nebraska Christian moved to 3-5-0 on the season will look to keep things going on Friday, October 4
th when they host Ecclesia (3-3-1) at Morrison Stadium (on the campus of Creighton University).
